Indian Laser Association (ILA) will be organizing the following short courses on Jan 7 and 8, 2012 (immediately preceding the DAE-BRNS National Laser Symposium, NLS-20) at Crystal Growth Centre, Anna University, Chennai:
Course Coordinator: Prof. J. Kumar, Anna University, Chennai,
Crystal Growth of Laser and Non linear crystals are of great interest for both fundamental research and for technological applications. Solid State Laser crystals such as Nd:YAG and related materials have been in the limelight owing to the controlled growth of these crystals using Czochrlaski technique and interesting improvements were made in early stages using flux growth. Similarly Ruby crystals were grown using Verneuil technique also known as crucible free growth. Titanium doped sapphire crystals were grown using the same method. In recent times the emission wavelenghts for different applications such as optical fibre communications are more effectively achieved using concepts of Band Gap Engineering using epitaxial techniques. The improvements in the lasing wavelength and power are more effectively controlled by the growth and process techniques.
The program will enable the participants to comprehensively understand the important growth techniques such as Czhochrlaski, Bridgman, Kyropoulous, Zone melting, Flux growth, Verneuil growth and epitaxial techniques such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition etc. The different techniques of characterising the grown crystals will also be addressed.
Course II: "Automation of Physics Experiments "
Course Coordinator: Shri. C.P. Navathe and Shri. V. Bhanage RRCAT, Indore
This course will provide detailed information required for interfacing various instruments used in various experiments with a personal computer or microcontroller, in a typical physics laboratory. It is aimed at young workers in physics and engineering. The coursework will include topics such as Analog and digital I/O; PCI, PXI, VME, USB I/O cards; Interfacing with GPIB, RS232, RS485, Ethernet, USB; Image acquisition; Motion Control and Software development. Finally there will be a discussion about some case studies based on actual setups developed in RRCAT.
The courses will run for two days from 9:30 to 17:30 hrs and will be conducted in parallel.
Intended Audience:
q M. Sc. / M. Tech./ Research students in appropriate disciplines
q Scientists/ Engineers/ Professionals interested in the chosen areas
